Five top swimmers from the Down Syndrome Swimming – GB squad have attended a series of training sessions held at Richmond Swimming Pool.

The five athletes travelled to the area to be coached by Richmond Dales Para Squad coaches Keith Hall and Zoe Cowan.

The athletes from South Ayrshire, Arbroath, Cheshire and Pontefract attended the training over the Bank Holiday weekend having received an invite from the Richmond Dales Swimming Club.

Swimming pools in their own home towns, along with many others, have yet to reopen or are only offering a limited service so they took the opportunity to get back to training albeit for a limited period of time.

Swimming coach Keith Hall, who is also the head coach of the Down Syndrome GB squad, said: “It was a pleasure to have these swimmers come and visit us this weekend.

“Through no fault of their own they have been unable to return to the sport they are so passionate about.

“Strict rules put in place by the Leisure Trust, Swim England and Richmond Dales ASC have to be followed before, during and after each sessions in the interests of safety and it’s no different for these athletes.

“We are extremely grateful to the staff at Richmondshire Leisure Trust for their support with these sessions.

“We just hope that more swimming pools open their doors or expand their provisions not just for athletes like these but for the mental health and well-being of all pool users.”
