Events and activities planned in Yorkshire Dales for Discover National Parks Fortnight.

One of the Wild About events is at Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre, where last summer a young visitor enjoyed the garden with a member of staff.

Flowers, lambs, red squirrels and dormice all feature in a packed programme of events and activities getting underway in the Yorkshire Dales National Park to celebrate Discover National Parks Fortnight, which takes place this month.

Three family activity days will help young children get closer to nature.

Lambing Time will be two hours of fleecy fun at Gill Garth Farm in Ribblesdale; Wild about Dormice will be held at Aysgarth Falls; and Wild about Streams will be an opportunity for children and their families to go stream dipping near Malham.

Be a Ranger for a Day events will take place in Kettlewell and Grassington, while Go Wild! days involving science and crafts will take place at Tebay Southbound Services and Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes.

There will be three guided walks during National Parks Fortnight.

Secret Squirrel will take people to an area full of red squirrels; Dent Town Trail will feature tales of Adam Sedgwick, the Terrible Knitters and the Dent Vampire; and Barns, walls and bridges will give people an insight into some of Wensleydale’s most distinctive built features.

Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority education and events manager, Catherine Kemp, said: “During this year’s National Parks Fortnight we’re shining the spotlight on some of the amazing animals that live in the national park.

“Our Wild About events will be led by our specialist staff; each of the two hour discovery sessions will get children and their families ‘hands on’ and back to nature.

“The Ranger for a Day events will provide opportunities for children to carry out practical conservation tasks, while the Go Wild events will help people discover what makes our national park so special.

“Our guided walks are a friendly and relaxed way to explore the National Park with expert guides in the company of fellow walkers.”

Discover National Parks Fortnight is intended to inspire people of all ages and interests to go outside and explore and learn more about the UK’s 15 national parks.
