An Evening with Jacqui Dankworth

Jazz Sirens

An evening of world-class music from one of the UK’s foremost jazz vocalists, celebrating the Jazz sirens whose legacy & influence defined a classic era of jazz singing, and are still strongly felt today. In this very special & intimate evening, Jacqui turns her attention to the iconic vocalists of the 20th Century, the singers whose names belong in The Great American Songbook: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee and a few more. Her arrangements of the classic numbers that made them international stars are woven together with lesser-known gems. Jacqui is joined by husband Charlie Wood on piano and Olli Hayhurst on bass.

Daughter of legendary musicians Johnny Dankworth & Cleo Laine, Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK, with an effortless mastery of a wide spectrum of genres. Known primarily as a jazz singer, her unique musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues & other influences. She has performed & recorded with a diverse array of celebrated musicians, including the Brodsky String Quartet, Courtney Pine, Paloma Faith, Clare Teale, The London Symphony Orchestra and legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea. In June 2019 Jacqui was awarded an MBE for services to music.

‘Whose voice would you take with you to a desert island? Jacqui Dankworth’s ability to inhabit the character of music in such a way as to divert the spotlight away from herself, imparting rich layers of interpretative meaning is perhaps the main reason for me choosing her. (Gramophone Magazine March 2022)‘One of our finest singers, regardless of category.’ Clive Davis (The Sunday Times)

‘A subtle control of dynamics and a voluptuous tonal richness that seems to make almost any material sound special.’ John Fordham (The Guardian)

Generously supported by Gerald and Ann Hodgson & an anonymous donor.
