International award-winning artist Martin Lever’s debut UK show will celebrate the wildlife that surrounds him in his new North Yorkshire home – in an exhibition at St Andrews Church, Grinton near Reeth from Friday 25 to Monday 28 August.

His collection of abstract animals elevates the creatures of Swaledale to iconic status. Inspired by a summer-long pilgrimage exploring the churches of North Yorkshire, Lever’s unique animal portraits pay homage to religious iconography with their striking silhouettes and delicate use of vibrant iridescent gilt.

Lever – who returned to UK last year after many decades living abroad – chose a church as the venue for his show for a number or reasons: “I wanted a venue that was as much a part of the local environment as the animals I am celebrating. Plus, given the iconographic style of my collection, the stunning 12th Century church in Grinton near my new home in Marrick seemed like the perfect atmospheric setting!”

The exhibition will be open to all comers – with opening times from 5:30pm – 9pm on the Friday launch event…and then from 12 noon to 6pm over the long Bank Holiday weekend.

Proceeds from sales will go towards the St Andrews sustainable churchyard fund.
