Set in a remote Turkish village and with some events based on experiences of the film’s co-writer and director, Mustang depicts the lives of five young orphaned sisters and the challenges they face growing up as girls in a conservative society.  Confined to their grandmother’s house after an innocent beachside frolic, the girls bridle against losing their freedom in a story grounded in both laughter and tears, and above all in the girls’ resilient strength. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards, the film has received widespread critical praise.
