Visitors to Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn will be able to uncover the hidden stories behind art and antiques this summer as a new free exhibition opens later this month.
An A–Z of Art & Antiques runs from Wednesday, July 22 to Sunday, August 30, offering an accessible and entertaining look at the history, inspiration and craftsmanship behind a wide range of objects.
The exhibition poses intriguing questions, including how broccoli inspired British masterpieces, why the Virgin Mary is so often painted wearing blue, how tree rings can help date works of art and what to look for when identifying a first edition of Harry Potter.
Through a mix of images and objects, visitors will be taken on an alphabetical journey through the world of art and antiques, revealing some of the unexpected stories behind everyday and unusual items.
Among the exhibits are an Arts and Crafts table inspired by the humble hay rake, vampire-slaying kits, graveyard guns and the remarkable tale of Zarafa the Giraffe, the first giraffe to arrive in France during the 19th century.
The exhibition has been designed to appeal to both newcomers and experienced collectors, encouraging visitors to take a closer look at the objects around them and the history they can reveal.
Organisers say the display showcases the fascinating connections between art, history, science and culture, highlighting how seemingly ordinary objects can have extraordinary stories to tell.
The exhibition is free to enter and is open daily from 8.30am until 5pm throughout its six-week run.
It is being held at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn, with visitors able to explore the display alongside the auction house’s regular galleries and facilities.
