Farmer urges walkers to keep dogs on lead after sheep attacked

A farmer has urged dog walkers to keep their pet on a lead after one of his sheep was attacked and killed at the weekend.

Stephen Wood, who farms at Aysgarth, found the ewe on Saturday afternoon besides a footpath to the west of the village.

The animal suffered wounds to its face, although Stephen believes it died of a heart attack due to the ordeal.

He said: “The poor girl had her face ravaged and flesh ripped off the bone, and has subsequently died of her injuries.

“It was really upsetting to come across this in our fields near Aysgarth.

“If you are walking dogs. keep them on a lead. It is the person’s responsibility to keep their dogs under control.

“This is not only upsetting but also comes at a financial cost as this is our livelihood.”
