They were later supported by firefighters from Richmond and Reeth.

Fire crews used a hose reel and breathing appartus to tackle the fire from inside the building.

A fire investigation officer has been called to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

It is believed the blaze may have started behind a range in the shop.

There were no casualties.

The damage was described by a North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman as extensive.

It is understood the shop has suffered fire and smoke damage, while the flats have just been damaged by smoke.
