Firefighters at the scene in Constantine Avenue, Colburn.

Firefighters were called to Colburn last night after smoke and heat were reported coming from a manhole cover.

A crew from Bedale responded to the incident on Constantine Avenue at about 7.38pm.

On arrival, firefighters discovered an electrical junction box which was arcing and giving off gas.

A safety cordon was put in place while crews monitored the temperature of the equipment using a thermal imaging camera.

Firefighters remained at the scene until representatives from the electricity board arrived.

The electrical supply to the junction box was isolated and the incident was then left in the hands of the electricity board.
