Firefighters called to HGV on fire on A1(M)

Firefighters were called to reports of a HGV on fire on the A1(M) last night.

Crews from Richmond, Bedale and Colburn attended the incident at about 10pm on the southbound carriageway near the Catterick junction.

On arrival they found that the driver of the lorry had managed to remove the load which was an excavator from the trailer.

The fire was confined to the rear axle and three tyres.

The crews used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet, lighting and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the fire, which is believed to have been caused by a blow-out to one of the tyres.
