UPDATED: Richmond School shuts for day after kitchen fire

Richmond School has closed for the day following a kitchen fire this morning.

The school said in a statement that nobody was injured in the blaze.

A spokesperson said: “This morning there has been a small fire in the school kitchens.

“No one has been injured and no one is in danger. Staff and students responded perfectly to the fire alarm as usual – thank you.”

The school later announced it had decided to shut for the day to allow the affected areas to be cleaned.

A statement said: “To allow for the necessary cleaning of the dining area and due to the fact there is no food available, the decision has been made to close the school.

“Students will shortly be contacting their parents for consent to return home. Tutors must either speak to parents or see a message to confirm this consent.

“We are currently liaising with bus companies to arrange transport home for students who travel on buses.

“Please liaise with your child to ensure that they have safe access to home.

“Any student unable to return home will be looked after by school staff until the end of the day.

“GCSE and A Level exams will continue as normal.”
