Firefighters rescued a nine-year-old girl who had fallen into a river near Hawes today.

Hawes and Richmond fire crews were called out at 10.45am after the girl slipped on a footpath and through a hedge.

She then fell 15ft down into Gayle Beck where she was left clinging to the riverbank with her feet in the water.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Hawes and Richmond responded to reports of a young child who had slipped down a riverbank.

“Crews used water rescue equipment and crewpower to reach the child and lift them to safety.

“Paramedics then checked the child over who thankfully was unharmed.”
