
An amber flood alert has been issued for the River Swale in Richmondshire.
The Environment Agency has issued the alert advising residents and businesses that flooding is possible and to be prepared.
The alert is one of 70 issued around the country following several days of rainfall, a further 23 more severe flood warnings have also been issued.
The alert for the River Swale states: “River levels have risen, as a result of heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening/night.
“Consequently, the risk of flooding remains. Areas most at risk are low lying land and roads. River levels on the upper Swale have now peaked at Reeth and are expected to peak further downstream at Catterick during Thursday morning.
“Further rainfall is forecast throughout Thursday. We are closely monitoring the situation.
“Our incident response staff are closely monitoring the forecast. Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded and avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses.”
