Rural insurer NFU Mutual says it is dealing with more than 200 claims for damage caused by the floods with an estimated cost over £3m.

NFU Mutual says it has activated its emergency claims plan to provide help to its members whose farms, homes and businesses were hit by the flash flood.

Paul Branch, acting head of claims at NFU Mutual, said: “This is another distressing event for our members and our first priority is to help them with their homes and farms which have been badly damaged by the weight of water that swept through the North Yorkshire Dales, particularly in the areas around Reeth and Leyburn.

“Our local, personal service means we have an agency office close by in Leyburn and a regional office in York so we are able to support our members and get help to them by making immediate emergency payments and arranging alternative accommodation.

“We’re now working closely with our expert partners and specialists to help get repairs underway quickly, continuing to ensure our members are cared for.

“Our local team is also at the heart of a huge community effort which is working with local and national agencies to get damaged roads and bridges repaired to get the local economy working again.”
