More than 200 people have joined a new boxing club launched by a former professional boxer.

Catterick Amateur Boxing Club opened earlier this month in a unit on the Walkerville Industrial Estate in Colburn.

The club has been launched by Justin Barnes, a former professional boxer and military boxing instructor who served with 4 Scots.

It has been Justin’s dream to launch a boxing club and after 18 months of struggling to get financial backing from others, he decided to take the plunge and fund the venture himself.

Justin said he had been “blown away” by the response since the official opening, which was carried out by Garrison Commander Joe Jordan.

More than 200 people have joined, including 140 six to 17-year-olds.

It is the number of young people coming along which is particularly pleasing for Justin, 36, from Catterick Village.

“The aim of the club is to get young kids of the streets or our of their bedrooms playing on their PlayStations and into a sporting environment.

“My target was to get 50 11-17-year-old and we’ve got double that in the first two weeks.”

Justin said there were numerous benefits to being involved in a boxing club, with all young people taught to respect each other and the equipment.

The aim is to train boxers so that they are ready to take part in competitive boxing.

New members are welcome and Justin stressed that nobody was put under pressure to get involved, with potential members welcome to watch a session and get involved when they felt comfortable.

All coaches have been DBS checked and the gym has been approved by England Boxing. CABS also has its own welfare officer to deal with any issues.

As well as classes for under 18s and open gym sessions, the club also runs women only classes.

The gym is based at Unit 3 , De Burgh Court, Walkerville Industrial Estate, Catterick Garrison, DL9 4XB.

  1. Great work, great for our local community, well done Justin. Thinking about popping along to see the gym and discuss the options to join and get back on the bag..
