Free events for toddlers and pre-schoolders at Richmondshire libraries

A range of free events for babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and their families will be held at libraries across Richmondshire to celebrate the Book Trust’s National Bookstart Week from Monday, 4 June, to Saturday, 9 June.

The theme of this year’s National Bookstart Week is Bookstart Bird Boogie. Children who attend any event will receive a free copy of the picture book, A Busy Day for Birds by Lucy Cousins.

It’s a playful story that is perfect for the family to share and to read aloud, full of actions to do and noises to make, and it’s guaranteed to get children aged up to five boogieing.

Events at libraries will have a bird-themed story and rhyme time with arts and crafts, including the chance for children to make their own owl headband.

County councillor Greg White, executive member for libraries, said: “Throughout the year, County Council libraries and community-managed libraries in North Yorkshire help to open up the exciting world of sharing stories, books and rhymes.

“Shared reading and encouraging reading for enjoyment from a young age can help children on their reading journeys and inspire a lifelong love of reading.”

Children up to the age of five can also take part in Bear’s Reading Adventure.

This is a free, brightly coloured book to which children can add stickers every time they visit their library.
