Film fans are being invited to enjoy free outdoor screenings beside the River Swale as a new programme of events launches in Richmond this summer.
The Summer on the Swale initiative is the first event under the new Richmond Presents banner, organised by the Original Richmond Business and Tourism Association (ORBTA) with delivery support from Richmond Community Interest Company.
Fully funded by York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith through the Combined Authority’s High Street Fund, the programme aims to celebrate Richmond while encouraging more people to visit the town.
The launch event will see The Station host a three-night outdoor cinema on the banks of the River Swale from Friday, August 14, to Sunday, August 16.
Audiences will be able to bring a blanket and enjoy a film under the summer sky, with Mamma Mia! showing on the Friday, Jurassic Park on the Saturday and The Greatest Showman on the Sunday.
Gates will open at 4pm each day, with screenings starting at 5pm. Pizzas, refreshments, popcorn and sweets will be available to buy from The Station.
Tickets are free but must be booked in advance, with numbers limited to 200 people per evening.
Mayor David Skaith said: “What better backdrop for a free night at the cinema than the beautiful River Swale.
“At the heart of my High Street Fund is backing local ideas that bring people together. This is a great example and one that people can really look forward to.”
Gemma Lord, chief executive of Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust, which owns and operates The Station, said the venue was delighted to host the first Richmond Presents event.
“There’s something magical about watching a great film outdoors beside the River Swale, and to be able to offer it for free, thanks to the Mayor’s funding and ORBTA and Richmond CIC’s vision, makes it all the more special,” she said.
“The Station has always been about bringing the community together, so this is a perfect fit. We can’t wait to welcome everyone down to the riverside in August.”
Organisers say Summer on the Swale is just the beginning of a wider programme of events, with more activities due to be announced under the Richmond Presents banner in the coming weeks.
Free tickets can be booked through The Station Cinema, with places available on a first come, first served basis.
