An unusual career change has paid off for a Dales father-of-two who has been made an equity partner at a historic law firm – just ten years after deciding to swap life as a chef for a career in law.
John Barker, a property law specialist originally from Askrigg in Wensleydale, has been appointed a director and equity partner at Leyburn-based Scotts Hall & Birtles, a firm with roots in the Yorkshire Dales stretching back almost 200 years.
Now 38, Mr Barker says the work ethic he developed in professional kitchens played a key role in his rise through the legal profession.
“You wouldn’t describe it as the traditional route,” he said.
“After leaving school I worked as a chef and a baker, but I’d always wanted to study law. When I was 21, I decided to apply to university and see if I could make it work.”
Mr Barker enrolled on a law degree at Teesside University, juggling his studies alongside full-time work. For five years, he attended evening lectures twice a week while continuing his demanding day job.
“At that stage, I honestly didn’t know how anyone was going to hire a chef with a law degree,” he said. “But I was determined to give myself the chance.”
That opportunity came when he joined Dales estate agency J.R. Hopper, a role which brought him into regular contact with Steve Scott, managing director of what is now Scotts Hall & Birtles. Before long, Mr Barker was offered a training contract at the firm.
“I was approaching 30, married, with a family to provide for,” he said. “I knew I had to make it work, and make it work quickly.”
Progress came steadily. Mr Barker was given increasing responsibility, working directly with clients and managing files from an early stage – a contrast, he says, to the experiences of friends at larger city firms.
“Some of my peers were burning out, working huge hours without developing,” he said. “Here, I was learning every day and still had the flexibility to be present for my family.”
His appointment as director came during the merger of Scotts Wright Solicitors and Hall & Birtles, marking a major milestone in his career.
Steve Scott said: “From the very beginning, John showed a real hunger to succeed. He’s never been afraid of hard work or complex cases, and he’s a brilliant example of what can be achieved with the right attitude and determination. We’re incredibly proud of him.”
For Mr Barker, the journey from kitchen to courtroom has been demanding but deeply rewarding.
“It’s been a fantastic place to grow,” he said. “Looking back, every step – even the tough ones – was worth it.”
