Fundraising ongoing for new Dales cricket pavilion

Work has started on the new pavilion.

Work has started on a new cricket pavilion for Spennithorne and Harmby Cricket Club, but more money is still needed to finish the project.

The club is replacing its cricket pavilion which was built by a TV crew to feature in an episode of All Creatures Great and Small first shown in 1989.

It was only meant as a temporary structure but went on to be well used for almost 30 years by the club.

This story continues after the adverts:

It has now reached the end of its life and work has started on a new building.

The pavilion is being built by local company Paul Young Building and Joinery at a very competitive rate, with club members and supporters doing all they can to reduce costs by providing labour and materials.

The club had hoped Sport England would contribute towards the overall cost, however the organisation withdrew its offer of funding at short notice.

This has left a shortfall of several thousand pounds which members are now trying to raise so the pavilion can be finished before the start of the new season.

Fletcher Mason, from the cricket club, said: “The cost is very reliant on the goodwill of local businesses who are donating building materials, the goodwill of local tradesmen some of whom are players, who are giving their services free of charge as the building progresses.

“The remaining playing members are acting as labourers, gofers etc to try their best to complete the pavilion for the start of this season.

“To try and raise this last bit of money several we are continuing to organise events to get the remainder of the money needed.

“We are very grateful for the support we have received already and welcome any further help.”
