Gambling centre to open at Princes Gate in Catterick Garrison

A slot machine gambling centre is set to open at the Princes Gate retail park in Catterick Garrison despite concerns from local community leaders.

Permission has been granted to change the use of a vacant retail shop to an adult gaming centre.

The premises lie between a Barnardo’s charity shop and the Foxglove pub.

The applicant, Cashino Gaming Ltd, trading as Merkur Slots, say the new branch will “bring this long-standing vacant unit back into active use and will generate job opportunities, football and linked tricks”.

The application for change of use has been approved despite opposition from Hipswell Parish Council.

The chair of planning for the council, Cllr Lawrence Grose, said in a letter to the authority: “Hipswell Parish Council are opposing the above planning for an adult gaming centre occupying a Unit 19 at Princes Gate Catterick Garrison.

“We feel the issues that gambling could bring to families in our area such as financial difficulties and potential family/relationship breakdowns far outweigh anything in favour of such an application.”

Approving the application, Bart Milburn, planning and community development manager for the district council, said in his report: “The proposed use will assist in providing a complimentary mix of retail, leisure and other appropriate types of uses as part of the town centre scheme at Princes Gate.

“It will not be incompatible with neighbouring uses, jeopardise highway safety and the proposal meets the requirements and expectations of policies of the Development Plan, the National Planning Policy Framework and National Planning Practice Guidance.”

  1. What a disgrace. When they were building Pribce’s Gate I remember someone said ‘This Centre will ensure that Catterick Garrison will have the shopping centre it deserves’. Where does a gaming centre fit into that??
