Gifted flautist to perform at Wensleydale church

Meera Maharaj.

Gifted young flautist Meera Maharaj will perform with pianist Dominic Degavino at St Andrew’s Church in Aysgarth on Friday.

They come to the Dales in the final phase of Swaledale Festival’s 2021 offering which, because of the risks associated with Covid-19, has seen concerts and arts events spread across the summer rather than being concentrated into the traditional two-week May/June fortnight.

Meera won the Royal Academy of Music Flute Prize before graduating with distinction.

She has performed at the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall where she recently played Principal Flute with Chineke! Orchestra at the BBC Proms.

This will be her second appearance at the Festival, after her charming performance as part of the Meraki Duo in 2018. Dominic is a passionate soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, and jazz player, performing extensively and winning prizes with a number of ensembles.

The pair, who are performing as part of Swaledale Festival’s award-winning ‘Young Artists Platform’, will play Bizet’s exciting Carmen Fantasy alongside music by Grace-Evangeline Mason and César Franck.

There will be two performances – starting at 16:00 and 19:30 – and each show will be 60 minutes long. Seating will be pre-allocated in ‘bubbles’ and audience members are encouraged to wear face coverings.
