Golfer to play 100 holes in 24 hours for Prostate Cancer UK

A local golfer is set to take on an extraordinary endurance challenge by playing 100 holes in 24 hours to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Mark Wrightman will take part in The Big Golf Race on Friday, May 8, tackling five and a half rounds of golf across four courses in a single day — covering around 35 miles on foot.

The challenge will begin at Richmond Golf Club with the opening 18 holes before moving on to Catterick Golf Club, Bedale Golf Club and Romanby Golf Club. He will then return to Richmond to complete the remaining holes and reach the 100-hole target.

All four clubs have supported the event by booking tee times and promoting the fundraiser in their clubhouses.

Mark will be supported by a two-person team travelling ahead to each course to coordinate timings, set up flags and banners on the first tee and help keep the ambitious schedule on track.

There is also an additional challenge attached to the fundraiser. If Mark raises £1,000 by May 8, Virtual Fairways in Darlington has agreed to allow him to use one of its simulator bays for a full 24 hours straight — playing courses from around the world back-to-back with no sleep and no rest. Parts of the attempt will be live-streamed, with viewers invited to set extra challenges during the round.

The cause is a personal one.

Mark said he has seen family members and close friends affected by prostate cancer and wants to raise both funds and awareness.

In the UK, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Despite this, it remains the only major cancer without a national screening programme.

“I am pushing myself physically and mentally to complete this challenge and raise as much as possible for a cause that affects so many men and families across our region,” he said.

Supporters can sponsor him per hole, from as little as 10p per hole, with all money raised going directly to Prostate Cancer UK to fund research, improve early diagnosis and support better treatment.

Mark is also sharing training updates and progress across his social media channels in the build-up to the event.

Anyone wishing to support the challenge can donate via his JustGiving page.
