The Wensleydale Hotel in Middleham has been sold to a new owner.
Dating back to the 18th century, the hotel features 17 en suite bedrooms, along with its restaurant, The Tack Room, which holds an AA Rosette. The property also includes an additional bar and a private dining room.
The hotel had been owned by Charles and Fiona Merchie since 2019, who ran the family business alongside their sons Monty and Hugo.
The Wensleydale Hotel has now been sold to Oliver Kwok, who says he plans to build on the existing foundations while respecting the hotel’s heritage and character.
He has also expressed a commitment to supporting the local community, local employment, and placing greater emphasis on sustainability and responsible hospitality.
Commenting on the sale, Fiona Merchie said: “The Wensleydale has been such a big part of our family’s life, and we are incredibly proud of what it has become. We are delighted to be handing it over to Oliver and wish him every success as he leads the hotel into its next chapter.”
Oliver Kwok added: “It is a real privilege to take on the stewardship of the Wensleydale. I am honoured by the trust Fiona has placed in me, and I look forward to building on the legacy she, Charles, Monty and Hugo have created.”
Mark Worley, Director of Hospitality at Christie & Co, who handled the sale, said the transaction highlighted the continued appeal of the Yorkshire Dales hospitality market.
“This marks the eighth major sale within the National Park by Christie & Co over the last four years, demonstrating how desirable the region remains for both buyers and visitors,” he said.
“The sale was a great collaboration between all parties, with expert support from John Morgan at Hay & Kilner, Russell Davidson at Gunnercooke, and Simon McAllister at Teesvale.”
