Grants available for Richmondshire organisers of children’s school holiday activities

Organisations in Richmondshire are being invited to apply for a grant to deliver healthy holiday activities for young people.

A wide-ranging programme of sports coaching, creative and performing arts sessions and healthy eating are set to be rolled out across the county for children and young people during the summer holidays.

North Yorkshire County Council has commissioned North Yorkshire Together – a partnership between Rural Arts, North Yorkshire Sport and North Yorkshire Youth – to oversee a programme of diverse holiday activities.

As the summer holidays approach, North Yorkshire Together are inviting other organisations to join them in providing the FEAST holiday activities programme. They are encouraging holiday activity providers – including voluntary groups, sports coaching organisations, arts organisations and schools – to apply for a grant to provide summer holiday activities.

Cllr Patrick Mulligan, executive member for education and skills, said: “Keeping children engaged over the long summer holidays with healthy activities is vitally important. It can combat social isolation among young people, introduce them to new experiences, discover hidden talents and develop new skills which can help them in everyday life.

“Whether providing activities such as table tennis or cricket coaching, junk modelling sessions, nature walks or helping them grow their own fruit and vegetables – there are so many worthwhile opportunities we can offer to children in North Yorkshire.”

The funding for the programme has come from the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme, to provide holiday club places to children eligible for free school meals.

The activities must be a mix of engaging activities and also teach children about health and nutrition, as well as provide them with healthy food. North Yorkshire Together can support organisations to access healthy food options if needed.

The activities should also enable children to;

  • be active during the school holidays;
  • Take part in activities which support the development of resilience, character and wellbeing, along with their wider educational attainment
  • Be safe and not socially isolated

The holiday clubs will be available to all pupils in North Yorkshire, but will be free of charge to families eligible for free schools meals.

Any organisation interested in taking part needs to apply by June 7.

The webinars will be running for community groups at 1pm on May 28 and 6pm on June 2 and for schools at 1pm and 6pm on June 17.
