Green Party candidates selected to fight by-elections

Green Party candidates Margaret Lowndes and Kevin Foster.

The Green Party is to put up candidates in two forthcoming by-elections prompted by the death of long-standing councillor John Blackie.

Kevin Foster will stand in the Upper Dales division of North Yorkshire County Council.

Margaret Lowndes will stand in the Hawes, High Abbotside and Upper Swaledale ward of Richmondshire District Council.

Mr Foster, who lives in Colburn, is a Green Party councillor on Richmondshire District Council.

He recently moved the successful motion for the council to declare a climate emergency.

Ms Lowndes lives in Arkengarthdale.

With the support of the parish council, she was recently successful in getting the District Council to improve waste disposal facilities in Langthwaite.

Anna Jackson, the Green Party election agent, said: “With the growing awareness of the environmental crisis, and in particular the climate emergency, we want to give people a chance to express their concerns through the ballot box.”
