Gymnastics teams to compete in British Championships

A gymnastics club has received the news that three of its teams have qualified for the TeamGym British Championships and will now head to South Wales to compete this summer.

The qualification was achieved after the micro teams from Richmondshire, Thirsk, Dales Gymnastics Club, which is based in Colburn and Thirsk, competed in the Northern Qualifier for the British TeamGym Championships at the beginning of March.

Since then, the gymnasts, coaches and parents have had a nervous wait to see if the scores were high enough to take them through to the British finals.

Last week they received the exciting news that they have had teams qualify for Level 3 Youth Womens, Level 2 Junior Mixed and Level 1 Disability events.

Head coach Rebecca Clay said: “This is an exciting moment for the club as the number of our teams qualifying for the British Championships is growing year on year.

“Our gymnasts work incredibly hard both in and outside of the gym and this is fantastic recognition and an exciting opportunity for them to showcase their skills against teams around Britain.

“It took a lot of hard work to get to this point but now the hard work continues as these young people have a British medal in their sights. Whatever happens at the final, this is a huge achievement, and a proud moment for the local area to have 14 gymnasts competing at such a high level.”

The three teams qualifying for the 2024 British TeamGym Champions are:

•    Richmondshire Royals – Level 3 Youth Womens Micro Team including India Clay, Violet Lumley, Chloe Proud, Sienna Cooper and Evie Reeves.

•    Richmondshire Level 2 Junior Mixed Micro Team including Henry Chapman, Lily Rodgers, Georgia Wilson, Evie Almack and Maisie Binks.

•    Richmondshire Thirsk Dales Disability Team including Charlotte Morris, Jack Allen, Isaac Clay and Hollie Bowers.

On top of their training, the club is busy fundraising to enable its elite TeamGym squad to head out to Denmark later this year to work with some of the Danish national coaches.

Members of the squad went in 2023 and the experience was invaluable so the club is aiming to raise enough funds to get even more of its gymnasts on this trip.
