Hawes beat Mavs while Carperby’s fine form continues

Hawes United won the league title six years ago but the Upper Dales team has struggled to mount a serious challenge for honours ever since.

A hard-fought win over Richmond Mavericks on Saturday — and a narrow loss to Unicorn the week before — suggest the Wensleydale team could be on the brink of a resurgence.

Hawes did it the hard way. Mavs went 2-0 up in the first half through a penalty from Sam Pickersgill and a strike from Adam Dunwoodie.

Dan Richardson pulled one back soon after the re-start following a cross from Tommy Calvert.

Richardson then got his second, before Calvert scored to secure the points.

Another Dales team on the up is Carperby who beat Catterick Garrison for the second time in two weeks.

The first half was goalless with neither side creating many chances.

The quality was higher in the second half from Carperby who kept the ball well and showed more urgency in possession.

Matthew Weatherald scored on the half volley from just inside the area after Catterick had failed to clear a corner.

It was Weatherald’s second goal in as many games after never previously netting.

Carperby continued to create chances with brother’s Scott and Sam Lambert causing the Catterick defence problems.

Sam Lambert got the goal his hard work deserved when he went through on goal and smashed the ball into the top corner.

Catterick’s best chance came when Jez Mortimer went through on goal, but his effort was comfortably saved by John Pickard in goal.

In the lower Wensleydale derby, Spenni came out on top, beating Leyburn 5-2.

A brace from Kalem Stanger, as well as goals from Scott Ryan, Lee Thompson and Jack Crook were enough to secure the points.

Lee Davison and Luke Wilkinson scored for Leyburn.

Elsewhere in the league Richmond Buck beat Reeth 2-1.

In mid-week games played in the Medals Shield, Richmond Town Reserves beat Buck 3-1 to set up a final with Richmond Mavericks, who beat Leyburn 5-1.
