Hawes top at Christmas after nine wins in a row

Nine league wins in a row mean Hawes sit at the top of the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League at Christmas.

But the upper Dales team was made to work hard for the points away at Leyburn on Saturday.

Hawes went a goal up on four minutes when Ryan Alderson scored direct from a corner following a misjudgement by Leyburn keeper Jack Davison.

Will Hewson levelled for the home side on 14 minutes when he finished well after collecting the ball from a corner, before James Wise scored a long-range effort to give Leyburn the lead.

A Ben Fawcett tap-in levelled the game shortly afterwards, but Hewson netted again.

The final goal of the half was scored by Hawes’ Bandon Acton to make it 3-3 at the break.

Teenage winger Riley Girgan netted soon after half time for Leyburn, with Hewson completing his hat-trick shortly afterwards.

Tommy Calvert then made it 5-4 on 57 minutes from a Jordan Iveson pull back.

Hewson got his fourth on 65 minutes, however Leyburn were then reduced to ten men for a period when midfielder Ben Parlour was sin binned following a disagreement about the correct score with the referee.

The incident caused Leyburn to lose their shape and discipline, with Hawes scoring four goals without reply to secure the win, Brett Calvert, Jordan Iveson, Tommy Calvert and Brandon Acton all getting on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, Unicorn stayed second with a 10-2 demolition of Askrigg, who held the Richmond team to a draw earlier in the season.

Liam Reeves did much of the damaging, scoring six.

Sam Lambert scored a brace and substitute Luke Dent got the third in a 3-0 win for Carperby over Richmond Town Academy.

Reeth appear to be improving week on week and secured another point with a 3-3 draw away at Catterick Garrison.

Mark Mackellar got two while Jordan Scragg also netted.
