Heavy snow shuts schools and leaves drivers stranded

Snow in Leyburn this morning.

Heavy snow overnight is causing problems in Richmondshire this morning.

The A66 trans-Pennine route between Scotch Corner and Penrith has shut due to dangerous driving conditions.

The northbound slip road on the A1(M) at Scotch Corner is also shut because of vehicles stuck in the snow.

Several motorists are stranded at Half Penny House, between Leyburn and Catterick Garrison.

The roads in Richmond and Catterick Garrison are reported to be very difficult to negotiate.

Upper Dales county councillor Yvonne Peacock said she was “on the war path” as there was no snow plough along the A684 in the Bainbridge and Hawes area until around 8am this morning.

She added: “I’m going to get to the bottom of why this happened as it’s simply not good enough.”

These are the schools which have confirmed they will be closed today:

The Wensleydale School in Leyburn was hoping to open, but staff have now decided to close for the day as only five members of staff can get in.

Trinity Academy Richmond has confirmed it will also be open today, as has Michael Syddall in Catterick Village.

The emergency services are urging motorists to leave extra time for journeys and make sure they have warm clothing and a shovel.

The forecast is for the snow to change to sleep and rain from 9am.

Strong winds are predicted across the district after lunch today.

A yellow weather warning for snow and rain is in place until 3pm today.

  1. I lived 6 years in Norway and didn’t see the chaos there was this morning.
Why do we see ploughs not ploughing the snow and only gritting the road, you have to clear deep snow first.
