HGV driver injured after lorry hits tree

A lorry driver was injured after his HGV crashed into a tree near Bedale last night.

The incident happened at Keeper’s Woo on Newton-le-Willows Road.

The driver was seriously injured and was taken to James Cook Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

 

 

 

The emergency services were called at around 3.45am.

Firefighters from Bedale, Masham and Ripon were called to the scene to rescue the male driver aged in his 40s who was trapped in his cab.

Crews used lighting, small tools, stabilisation equipment as well as a specially designed platform to gain access to the cab and extricate the casualty.

The driver was left in the hands of the ambulance service and transported to hospital via road ambulance.

A recovery operation was underway this morning and police remained at the scene.

The roads around the crash remained closed.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Part of a bridge parapet was damaged, and police contacted the local authority to assess it.

“Northern Powergrid also attended to check electricity cables in the area.

“The road was closed to make the scene safe and allow the lorry to be recovered.”
