Hipswell barn fire started deliberately, fire service says

A fire in a barn in Hipswell was started deliberately by children, the fire service believes.

Crews from Coburn, Richmond and Leyburn were called to the incident yesterday at about 4.10pm.

The fire was in a barn measuring around 10m by 30m.

The barn contained bales of straw and bags of fertiliser.

Thr barn was badly damaged and around 80 to 100 bales and some of the fertiliser was destroyed.

Crews used two hose reels, a 45mm hose, and the farmer’s equipment.

A revisit was due to be carried out today.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “The cause is believed to be deliberate as kids were seen in the barn prior to the fire.”
