The first ever Garrison Gathering will take place on May 5 to coincide with the visit to the district of the Tour de Yorkshire – and help is wanted to make the community event a big success.
The all-day gala will take place in Coronation Park and will be free to attend.
It is being organised by the five local parish councils working with the military, with support from Richmondshire District Council.
This story continues after the adverts:
The organising committee has brought in local events company Mindful Creatives to run the gathering.
The event will feature a range of entertainment and activities.
A barbecue and afternoon tea will be provided by Colburn Hub and Community Cafe, with other food vendors attending.
The event will coincide with the Tour de Yorkshire, with stage three of the race starting in Catterick Garrison after the riders arrive from Richmond.
There will be a big screen in the park to watch the race from.
Other plans include a craft competition tent, Tour-themed games, a family sports day, raffle and tombola, face painting, trade stand and a dog show.
A large land art display will be created at the start of the race featuring flowers created out of old plastic bottles, which will then be kept for future events.
There will be red flowers to represent the poppy and the garrison’s military ties and a Yorkshire white rose.
Richmondshire District Council chairman Angie Dale is one of the people behind the Garrison Gathering and came up with the idea for the land art.
She has appealed for people to donate old plastic bottles, small and large, and help create the flowers, as well as two miles of bunting which will be used to decorate the town on the 5th.
A series of workshops will take place to make the art and decorations, starting with this Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm. Everyone is welcome.
Other dates are April 3 from 9.30am to 12pm and then 6pm to 8.30pm, April 5 from 9.30aqm to 12pm, April 10 from 9.30am to 12pm, April 12 from 9.30am to 12pm and 6pm to 8.30pm.
Volunteers to help run the event are wanted and any community groups wanting to get involved are also welcome to step forward.
More trade stalls are also wanted.
Schools in the garrison have already offered to help make the decorations.
Cllr Dale said the first Garrison Gathering would be a fantastic family event.
She added: “This is the first time the five parishes have worked together to create a fabulous community event for the garrison.
“As well as the arrival of the Tour de Yorkshire we will celebrate 100 years since the garrison was formed in 1918.
“The aim is to make sure it is an affordable event and bring everyone together.”
Plastic bottles can be dropped off at Colburn Village Hall.
