Jubilee performing arts events planned in Leyburn

Plans are taking shape in Leyburn for a weekend of performances to mark the Queen’s Jubilee.

Leyburn Arts & Community Centre has invited the community to join in their Platinum Jubilee Festival of Performing Arts to be held over the weekend prior to the main national celebrations.

Free events will be accompanied with bacon butties and afternoon tea.

The festival will start on Friday, May 27 with a special screening of The Queen, starring Helen Mirren.

Saturday’s events include dancing, ukulele, Leyburn Amateur Dramatics Society performing one of their popular mini dramas, all supported by Blueboxt young talented musicians.

In the afternoon a concert by Leyburn Band will be staged.

Events on Sunday include a performance by Community Pop Choir, a Platinum Tree planting and the awarding of prizes to the winners of the young people’s art competition.

The festival is subsidised weekend of free activities supported by Richmondshire District Council, Leyburn Town Council and Leyburn Arts & Community Centre.

Among the other events for the month organised by Leyburn Arts & Community Centre include a dance ceilidh, on Wednesday, May 18, entitled Six Feet, Three Shoes. The event is described as a perfect fusion of fun, rhythm, emotion and magic. This event is being held at Wensleydale Rugby Club. Tel 01969 624510 to book, tickets £8 adults, £4 for young people.

The arts centre is also staging a live cinema event on Sunday, May 8 with Northern Ballet performing the ballet Merlin, which is billed as “a sweeping epic adventure of heartbreak, hope and magic”.
