Sports Direct at the Princes Gate Retail Park in Catterick Garrison is set to close after bosses rejected a rent reduction, agents for the landlords have confirmed.
Signs advising prices had been reduced because the store was closing down were put up recently.
Staff have told customers the store is closing due to a disagreement over rent, with some shoppers being advised the rent was set to increase.
However, Mark Williams, from property consultants Mason Owen, which represent the owners of the retail park, said claims the landlords had wanted to increase the rent were incorrect.
“I can confirm that Sports Direct had a break clause in the original lease that was granted to them when they took the unit in 2015.
“They choose to operate this break clause in February this year, which was before the Government restrictions in relation to Covid-19 took effect.
“My client has been in negotiations with them for some time, and has offered a reduction in the rent that they were paying, but they have decided they no longer want to remain trading at Princess Gate Retail Park.”
Richmondshire Today has contacted Sports Direct for an official comment, but has not yet had a response.

The landlords must be very greedy, they should have come to an agreement as a few places are now vacant, so won’t be getting any income soon. It’s Shame on the landlords
