A Leyburn beauty salon has taken on an apprentice bringing the total supported through a district council scheme to 18.

The Richmondshire authority launched its apprenticeship scheme in March, with businesses able to apply for up to £2,000 in funding.

Salon Beautique, in Leyburn Market Place, has employed 16-year -old Jade Walker who is now studying an NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing at Darlington College while working at the business.

Owner Becci Evemy received a grant of £504 to buy hairdressing kit for the college course and equipment for the salon – including hairdryer, straighteners and clippers.

Council leader, Councillor Yvonne Peacock said: “This scheme is helping to support local businesses to bring local people on to their staff role.

“We have already seen 18 in new jobs – and we have funding for more.”

The deadline for applications for the next round of funding is November 1 – contact Samantha.coultish@richmondshire.gov.uk for more information.
