Leyburn Christmas lights competition winners receive trophy

Kelly and Paul Sutch receive the trophy from Alison Laws, chair of the Lower Wensleydale Business Network.

The winners of the inaugural Leyburn Christmas lights competition have received their trophy.

The competition, which was sponsored by Richmondshire Today, was won by Kelly and Paul Sutch, who live in Maythorne.

They receive a trophy and a family day ticket to the Forbidden Corner attraction on Coverdale.

The couple are well known for their seasonal displays, with their annual Halloween attraction also being a big hit with local children.

Kelly, who is a dinner lady at Leyburn Primary School, said she was delighted to win and impressed with how many other houses in the town had put up lights and displays this year.

“Because of Covid I think people have made an effort and it’s really brightened up the town, which is great.”

The couple started the display when they moved to their current house nine years ago and aim to buy at least one new feature every year.

Alison Laws, chair of the Lower Wensleydale Business Association, said there had been a good response to the competition and to other festive events organised in conjunction with the town council this year.

She said it was hoped to build on the celebrations next year.
