A Leyburn shop owner and author has raised more than £2,000 to support the work of charities helping Australia’s wildlife.

Hannah Russell, who runs Russell Home interiors and Gifts and also writes the Little Alf series of books, was prompted to act by the devastating wildfires currently sweeping the country.

She has brought out two designs of koalas which have been printed on to clothing and merchandise.

All of the proceeds from sales of the items will go to Australian wildlife animal charities.

She has already raised more than £2,000 despite only launching the appeal this week.

The money raised will be used to fund emergency veterinary care and scientific intervention, such as exploring supplementary feeding for animals who have survived, but whose habitats have been destroyed in the bush fires.

Hannah said: “I have been left devastated by the ongoing emerging news.

“Been in the UK I feel pretty helpless but I started to think about things I could do using the business resources I have and put a plan in place last week.

“Over the weekend I launched the designs and have had a large amount of orders so far, so I’m hoping that continues.

“One of the companies I work with on the clothing has pledged to double what I raise from the clothing which is brilliant and will go towards helping the animals.”
