Leyburn venue bids to improve accessibility

The Dalesman Club, in Leyburn.

A Leyburn venue has launched a fundraising appeal to improve accessibility for customers.

The Dalesman Club, which is on the first floor of a building in the town’s market place, wants to build a lift at the rear of the building.

The club also aims to convert an existing toilet into a disabled loo.

Club secretary Bill Patrick said the work is expected to cost at least £20,000.

“We’ve have around £2,000 so far. We spoke to Richmondshire District Council about a grant but unfortunately although we don’t make a profit, we’re classed a business and aren’t eligible.

“The lift will be built at the back of the building. The doorway is to be widened and a platform lift will go up to the top platform of fire escape stairs.”

The lift will be built at the rear of the building.

The club is planning a fundraising event on August 28 with quoits, a barbecue and a raffle.

Raffle prize donations and any other help towards the appeal would be appreciated.
