Richmond School pupil Rose Harris has been selected to compete with Team England at the Summit Cheer Championships held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The Year 8 pupil currently trains and competes with the Catterick-based Lazer Cheer Academy in their Ice Queens team.

Rose will represent Team England on April 24 and 25, and then Lazer Cheer’s Ice Queens the following week.

She has been cheerleading since 2016 when she moved from being a gymnast to a cheerleader.

After a successful Jamfest competition in Liverpool last year with Lazer Cheer, Rose attended trials for Team England in London.

She was selected for the squad of around 30 athletes and has attended numerous training sessions in London and Coventry since then.

The sessions have involved learning the complex routine that they will perform at the championships in Florida, as well as bonding together as a team, an aspect of cheerleading that Rose says she really enjoys.

Rose will be travelling out to Florida with her mum, Nicola.

She said: “Rose started cheerleading in August 2016. She soon realised that she absolutely loved it.

“She trains six days a week and has quite a few weekend competitions as well.

“We spend a lot of time running her backwards and forwards to the gym but I know cheer is what makes her who she is. It has made her much more confident and she has a fantastic friendship with her teammates.

“We are so proud of her winning a bid to compete at the summit in Florida and achieving a place on the team England squad. I am very excited to watch her achieve her dreams while we are away.”
