Local Ukrainian community comes together to celebrate Christmas

The Ukrainian community in Richmondshire came together with their sponsors at the Methodist Church Hall in Richmond to hold their second Christmas celebration since the invasion of their country.

The event on December 29 was attended by around 120 Ukrainians and guests, including about 30 children.

Roman Pronyszyn, on behalf of the Ukrainian community, welcomed Cllr Ian Woods, the mayor of Richmond, and Cllr John Harris.

He thanked them for the warm welcome the people of the area have given to the Ukrainian visitors.

He also expressed the gratitude of Ukrainians to Lady Harris for her support of the local community and her steadfast support in the House of Lords for Ukraine.

Oksana Sizenko-Scott described the traditional dishes which had been prepared by the local Ukrainian ladies, and Iryna Komarova read out a poem, translated by Yana Drapak.

The highlight of the evening for the children, and some of the adults, was the appearance of Santa Claus (or Grandfather Frost), who made a special trip from the North Pole.

Presents were handed out while some of the attendees sang traditional Ukrainian Christmas carols.
