The “loo with a view” at Aysgarth Falls was sold for £14,000 at an auction at Northallerton.
Estate agents Robin Jessop had put a guide price of £8,000 on the old toilet block on the south side of the River Ure below the Middle Falls.
The auctioneer said it was understood that there might be fishing rights for the 3.5m width of the building.
This story continues after the adverts:
They had described the sale as a “superb opportunity to purchase a unique property which is situated in an unrivalled position overlooking Aysgarth Falls.”
The toilet block was built for the cottages on the opposite side of the road – so “in days of Yore” it was quite a long walk to get to the loo!
At the sale at the Allerton Court Hotel in Northallerton there was also a flurry of bidding for a cottage in Castle Walk in Richmond which pushed up the price from £50,000 to £120,000.
The agents had advertised that this was in need of refurbishment and structural repairs.
Two dilapidated adjoining cottages in Thoralby went for £315,000 compared to the guide price of £200,000 to £250,000.
