A man has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal accident on the A66 two years ago.

Kerstin Hanke, 55, from Bunde, in Germany, was travelling in a VW Touran when it was involved in a collision with a red Scania HGV on March 22, 2019.

The other occupant of the VW, Thomas Hanke, was seriously injured.

Yesterday, Nathan David Greene, 33, of Hillsborough, County Down, appeared before York magistrates via video link charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving.

The defendant was also accused of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

No pleas were entered and the accused is to back at York Crown Court next month.

The collision occurred on the A66 at the junction New Lane, near Ravensworth, which has been the scene of a number of serious accidents in recent years.

The junction is due to be changed to be made safer as part of a project to convert the A66 into dual carriageway for its entire length.
