Man crashed car then reported it stolen

A man has been issued with a fixed penalty notice after crashing his own car and then reporting it stolen.

Richmondshire police say a local man reported that his car had been stolen from Richmond earlier this morning.

A statement of complaint was completed by an officer and a number of officers carried out area searches to locate the stolen car.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “The vehicle was later located and it had crashed.

“It was discovered the man who reported the stolen car was the one who was driving when it crashed.”

The man has been issued with a fixed penalty notice for wasting police time.

“North Yorkshire Police are committed to supporting victims of crime and take every report of an incident seriously,” the spokesman added.

“We work hard to investigate crime and drive justice for victims.

“It is simply not fair on the real victims when others waste police time and make things up.”
