March arts preview

The Urban Quartet.

There may still be tickets for Richmond Chamber Orchestra at the Georgian Theatre (March 3) but what are this month’s other most unmissable offerings? Top drama is Rebecca Vaughan’s show Austen’s Women (Georgian Theatre, March 13). It really is five-star stuff; stunning acting, witty, brilliantly devised. Jane Austen would giggle and approve. Top talk is the great actor Barry Rutter, much missed but back on stage here talking about Shakespeare’s Royals (Georgian Theatre, March 7). He is a fount of wisdom about them, having played most of the roles several times!

Top music must be Lauren Zhang, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2018, who plays a dazzling programme at Darlington Dolphin Centre (March 17), closely followed by Richmondshire Concerts’ Maxwell Quartet (Richmond School March 23) offering an intriguing programme that includes Beethoven’s Quartet in C sharp minor, Op.131, and Worksongs, a piece of their own devising based around Scottish folk tunes. Talking of folk, Reeth Memorial Hall is back on stream with the Urban Folk Quartet, displaying virtuoso energy and crossover tunes (March 9), and on March 22, Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggieri. Kiki is always a sell-out, and you’re unlikely to get a ticket on the door.

Top film is the truly wonderful National Theatre Live: The Motive & the Cue. It has knocked critics and audiences sideways with its beautifully crafted script and superlative acting. It is a new play by Jack Thorne about Richard Burton and John Gielgud rehearsing Shakespeare’s Hamlet,  Johnny Flynn plays Burton, playing the title role, while Mark Gatiss is Gielgud, directing the play within a play.  March 21 in Northallerton, Richmond Station and at Leyburn Art and Community Centre (LACC), There’s a lovely concert from the Richmondshire Orchestra (March 24 at LACC): Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony and cellist Jeremy Harbottle playing the Rococo Variations. Top date? March 11, when Swaledale Festival tickets go on general sale. More on that next month. It’s another cracking programme!
