Men arrested for theft after being spotted acting suspiciously

Two men were arrested on suspicion of theft this morning after a report from an off duty police officer of a suspicious vehicle.

At about 4am on Sunday a silver Peugeot Boxer van containing two Eastern European males was spotted acting suspiciously in the Leyburn, then West Witton area.

Inspector Martin Metcalfe, from Richmondshire neighbourhood policing team, said: “Officers on duty quickly responded and soon after arrested two males and the vehicle was seized.

“They were arrested on suspicion of theft at this stage, but from what I have seen, they were at the start of a crime spree across the Dales and I am delighted we have prevented that from occurring.”

Insp Metcalfe described the incident as a  “fantastic example of making sure you contact us if something appears out of place”.
“We believe we have located the premises where the stolen items in the van were from, but obviously if anyone else in Richmondshire has suffered from any crime overnight, please contact us on the 101 system to report it.

“I have sent this to everyone, as I believe it offers reassurance to you all that we will respond promptly to anything suspicious that is reported.”
