Middleham Town Council given notice on phone box

Middleham.

Middleham Town Council decided at is meeting on June 25 to check with Racing Welfare whether the BT phone box in the town was used regularly by those involved in the racing industry.

The council had received 90 days notice from BT about the removal of the phone box. It decided to confer with Racing Welfare before deciding on a response at its meeting on July 30.

Planning . – Although the council was disappointed that the owner of the building where the Fish and Chip Shop is situated had applied for retrospective permission for alterations to the listed building it did not object to them.

These included the replacement of a timber window to the side lean-to into the store; replacement lintel to the window above the alleyway, siting of a gas bottle store and installation of extract flue at the rear; and internal alterations to the first and second floors to reduce the number of flats from three to two.

The council did object to planning permission being given for solar panels plus UPVC windows and doors on a cottage in Castle Hill as it felt that this was not in keeping with Article 4 of the conservation area guidelines. It had no objections to the proposed internal alterations to the cottage.

As the Forbidden Corner had applied to remain open from 6pm to 7.30pm during the school holidays the councillors discussed the opening hours as a whole. They confirmed they would be happy with the later opening but wanted to stipulate that earlier opening hours would not be supported.

This was because they felt that opening before 12pm could lead to an increase in accidents on the main road through Middleham to the Forbidden Corner at peak times when the racing industry was making use of the gallops.

Middleham Bridge. – North Yorkshire councillor Karin Sedgwick told the council that the mirror at Middleham Bridge was not a highways issue. The clerk confirmed that the highways department had passed on the questions about this to the county planning department.

A resident had expressed concerns to Cllr Lorna Skelton about the electric cable across the footpath at West End which was being used to charge electric vehicles. The clerk will contact relevant agencies about this.

Electricity supply. – When discussing the Sustainability Appraising Scoping Report  the councillors agreed that a section should be included requesting North Yorkshire Council to consult with Northern PowerGrid about how the local grid infrastructure will cope in the future with the increase in instillation of electric charging points, air source heat pumps, and other modern facilities.

Next  meeting. – Is in the Key Centre at 6.30pm on Wednesday July 30.

If the BT phone box is going to be removed would it be possible for the Middleham council to stump up some money to remove the post box from it’s present position out side the Wensleydale hotel to the much safer position where the BT phone box was which would be much more central and safer for the people of Middleham to use.
