Richmondshire teams experienced mixed fortunes in the North Riding Saturday Challenge Cup at the weekend.

Several teams progressed to the next round, including Catterick Garrison who put their disappointing league form aside to beat Civil Service York 5-2.

Jez Mortimer got Catterick underway after just three minutes. Two from Mathew Leaf and goals from Tim Holland and Jamie Hunt were enough to give the home side the win.

Unicorn also had a good win against Helperby, who like Catterick’s opposition play their football in the York Minster leagues.

Unicorn got off the mark when Liam Reeves’ shot was parried and Luke Hamilton tapped in the rebound.

The visitors equalised, before Reeves tapped in another rebound from his own shot.

Helperby came back again, only for James Moohan to head in after Gary Nicholson had flicked on a free-kick.

Tom Sweeney then scored a beauty from 25 yards before Helperby  pulled a goal back to make for a nervy finish, but the Richmond team held on.

In the only all Richmondshire cup tie, Richmond Town Reserves beat Carperby 2-1.

The close game was decided by a scrappy goal on the stroke of half-time.

Town had the better of the early stages, but Carperby got back in the game and took the lead when Sam Lambert raced onto Scott Alderson’s through ball and lobbed the oncoming keeper from 25 yards.

Town equalised when a neat passing move was finished well by Harry Beresford.

Danny Allen then gave them the lead when Carperby failed to deal with a cross and Allen tapped home from close range.

Hawes were knocked out on penalties after their game against Yarm and Eaglescliffe finished 0-0.

Spennithorne were well beaten 5-1 by Lealholm.

Back in the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League, Richmond Mavericks beat Reeth 12-2, with James Kelly scoring a double hat-trick.
