More than 170 runners took on the challenging Wensleydale Rotary James Herriot Trail Race at the weekend, with organisers raising almost £3,000 for local charitable projects.
A total of 202 runners registered for the 14km race, with 173 taking to the start line at Bolton Castle. Every competitor completed the demanding course despite a strong headwind.
Held in cooler conditions than recent weeks, the route began with a steep climb from Castle Bolton village up Black Hill before heading onto the moors. Runners then followed a circular route across the tracks before returning to finish close to the start.
The race was won by Samesh Chotai, of Ilkley, who crossed the line in 53 minutes 44 seconds. Mathew Cardus, of Settle and Settle Harriers, finished second in 55:31, while Ian Cocks, of Clayton-le-Moors, took third place in 60:34.
The women’s race was won by Milly Hestletine, of Skipton, in 71:30. Colleen Fotherby, of Harrogate and Nidderdale Fell and Trail, was second in 73:13, with Lisa Molus, of Northallerton, third in 75:21.
Wensleydale Rotary Club president Richard Pennell thanked everyone who helped make the event a success.
He said: “The James Herriot Trail Race is part of the trio of events run by the club. These include the Wensleydale Wander in the spring and the Wensleydale Saunter held in September.
“Without the support of the community in and around Leyburn we just wouldn’t be able to run this and the other events.
“I must thank Leyburn Walking Shop for donating the prizes and also our thanks go to Lord Bolton, Richard Spensley & Son and Stewart Raw for the use of their land.
“We have been able to raise close to £3,000 which we will use to support local charitable projects.”
The annual race has become a popular fixture on the local sporting calendar, attracting runners from across the region while raising funds to support good causes in Wensleydale.
