Motorists rescued from flood water but Richmondshire escapes worst of Storm Dennis

Firefighters were called to a number of incidents due to Storm Dennis last night, but the district appeared to have escaped relatively unscathed despite the heavy rain and strong winds.

At around 8pm last night fire crews from Richmond and Colburn responded to reports of two people trapped in a car in flood water at Gilling West.

The vehicle and passengers were out and in safety on the arrival of the fire service and advice was given to the driver to contact recovery.

At around the same time a fire officer responded to reports of flooding in Reeth Road, Richmond.

This was surface water on the road which was not affecting any properties.

No action was required by the fire service.

A number of roads are reported to be blocked by flooding this morning including the A684 at Wensley and the Reeth to Muker road, with flooding reported near Low Row.

North Yorkshire County Council says the A684 is closed at Appersett.

The road at Middleham Bridge, Grinton and Skeeby is passable with care, the county council says.

The A684 is also closed at Morton on Swale due to flooding.
