MP praises “inspiring” new primary school in Catterick Village

Rishi Sunak has praised the new Michael Syddall Church of England (Aided) Primary School in Catterick Village, describing it as a “great environment for learning”.

Pupils moved into the purpose-built school building just a few weeks ago, with the former school buildings now set to be demolished to make way for new playing fields.

The project was delivered through the Government’s School Rebuilding Programme, with funding approved during Mr Sunak’s time in Government.

During a visit to the school, Mr Sunak toured the new classrooms alongside headteacher Alison McHarg and representatives from construction firm Bowmer + Kirkland.

He joined pupils in music, art and Year 6 reading lessons, speaking to children about the importance of reading and encouraging them to read widely to support all areas of learning.

Mr Sunak said: “The new school is clearly an inspiring place for the pupils and the staff and everyone I spoke to felt good about their new surroundings.

“There was an energy about the place that I am sure will be reflected in the children’s experience and the staff’s ability to deliver a first-class education.”

Mrs McHarg said pupils had been eager to show off their new surroundings.

She said: “The pupils were so excited and proud to show Rishi our new school, the classrooms, provision, and outdoor spaces.

“It has been a long journey from the start of this project to our new school today, with some challenges along the way. But it has been worth the wait.

“The purpose-built classrooms provide our pupils with inspiring and engaging learning environments that will support and enhance all learning opportunities.

“We have been delighted to see our vision become a reality, creating a school community where every child can thrive, achieve, and feel proud of their surroundings.”

North Yorkshire Council executive member for education, learning and skills, Annabel Wilkinson, said the rebuild represented a major investment in local children and families.

She said: “I am very pleased that the school rebuild project is complete. This represents a significant investment in the future of our children, providing them with an improved and inspiring learning environment.

“The modern facilities, including the new car park and playing fields, will make a real difference to pupils, staff and families.

“This investment gives children an excellent environment to learn, play and thrive and it’s encouraging to see the school growing to meet the needs of the community.”
